Sonic Advance 2

Platform: Gameboy Advance

After Sonic appeared on a Nintendo system for the first time with Sonic Advance (unless you include the horribly programmed hacks), fans were intrigued by the direction the Sonic franchise was heading. Considering Sonic Advance was extremely successful worldwide, a sequel starring the 'hog was bound to surface.

Sonic Team used the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' formula, and built Sonic Advance 2 directly off of its predecessor's engine. Much like Sonic Advance, the player had a choice of playing as one of five characters: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy made an expected return, while a new character named Cream the Rabbit also made her debut. The characters sported some new abilities, such as an effective attack that would allow the character to stop in mid-air and slam into the ground. The most unique character was by far Cream, as she could use her pet chao Cheese to automatically attack nearby enemies. This obviously lowered difficulty to a degree, and was most likely created in favor of inexperienced players.

Stages, as usual, were comprised of two acts each. The levels were considerably longer than Sonic Advance's, and were far more detailed graphically. The most notable change the Advance series experienced was the fact that boss battles were fought while Sonic (or whoever the player chose) raced after Eggman, unlike the previous sidescroller, where the two would fight in one seclosed area.

Sonic Advance 2 had some neat little extras, such as the return of the Tiny Chao Garden, as well as the pinnacle of the series, Special Stages. By collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds within these stages (which was widely considered a difficult task), an additional stage would be unlocked, which featured Super Sonic.

The second installment of the Sonic Advance series was considered just as successful as the first, if not more. The fact that Sonic had become popular in the 2D and 3D world proved to add variety to the series, which resulted in more fans overall.
